hello, i am qnete and these are my play-doh stories. some of them are already three years old and it feels like i ve become somewhat of a different person since then. still, i like to listen to them from time to time, thinking of how i was back then, reminding me of what helped shape me, what helped me become who i am now. sometimes, i also get the feeling that it is not me who wrote the stories. they seem to seem unknown to me, just like they seem to you, because you are not me. then i listen, and i know again.

when beatsqueeze offered me the opportunity to release a 7” with them, i instantly thought i should make the most out of the many chinese samples i had saved for my chinoiseries project. this record includes many unused samples, drum breaks, sounds and other various samples on side a and side b is a proper dj-tool (skipproof) made to scratch with. make your own chinoiseries beat and then scratch on top of it, i thought that was a pretty cool idea!

genosha basic artists, ghost in the machine make their perc trax debut! full picture sleeve perc trax returns to the dance floor after the political firestorm that was perc s bitter music with the debut release on the label from the netherland s ghost in the machine. the perc and therefore perc trax name stems from the word percussion and these three drum-focused tracks sum up the label s name perfectly. rarely appearing away from their own genosha basic imprint this ep hits as hard as anything on perc trax in recent years and along with recent releases from ansome and scalameriya ushers in a new wave of artists and a distinct new chapter in the perc trax story. the holy grill commands the whole of the a-side and charges forward until a reese led breakdown gives you a moment to pause for breath. the b-side contains two percussive workouts that have enough movement and development to them to elevate them above simple drum tools. as b2 track pskdt s locked groove loops endlessly (a first for perc trax), it is clear this ep is a hard-hitting statement of intent from a duo you should be hearing a lot more on perc trax in the near future.

after a first ep of the year from stl, the solar phenomena label now welcomes romania’s romansoff. the raw tools label boss hails from bucharest and has also released his gritty, stripped back house and techno on creme organization and sportiv. here he offers four new tracks, with one remix from timedance man ploy completing the package.
halo epitomises romansoff’s style with its slow, heavy drums and sparse, scattered perc sounds. a lo-fi melody adds colour, while coach jacket ups the ante with busier claps and crashing hits laid over a turbulent, unsettled bassline. increasing the pressure further, graded grows manic with punchy drums, layers of fuzzy synths and bass and distant cries that are dark and unsettling. ploy flips this one into a prickly and atmospheric drum track that keeps you on edge.

figure jams enters the next round, setting up a pairing between two hardware-loving, no-frills techno-purists. both artists build on vibrant, machine-made roughness, yet each leaving their uniquely flavored footprint. kicking things off is eindhovens albert van abbe, whose wide-open soundscapes and searching synths evoke an emotional impact that goes far beyond mere tools, able to equally move and sooth even the fiercest of late-night lovers. low-key producer sp-x appears on the flipside, ready to get lost deep within layers of hypnotic loops. searing percussion, rumbling bass and dubby synths engage in complex conversation, subtly swelling and swaying but always keeping the groove ever so tight.

psyfunk is a record series curated by franco cinelli, driving force of the south american underground dance music landscape and argentina’s most respected producer and dj. with psyfunk, cinelli provides a selection of minutely crafted and slowly-evolving extended dj tools. for this third chapter, cinelli calls on young upcoming talents from argentina and uruguay. opening up the a.side, bodeler lands with his reduced ghettotek funk, which is already one of the deadly dancefloor weapons of some of the most respected djs out there. irresistible! following up, is richard hz. other very promising artist on argentine grounds, hz provides here a burning break track, with clear touches of psychedelic acid and mystery. an ideal track to keep the floor floating in thin air. on the flip! alan castro, hailing from the atlantic coast of bahia blanca, produces here an intimate number packed with melancholy. jazzy relaxing swings under a sea of glitches, afterhour material. bringing this record to the runout is a wonderful and rare appearance of the uruguayan z@p. “mental telepathy” is resolutely funky and a clear flashback to the us midwest right when house became techno.

villa Åbo in the alternative solo project of swedish musician and producer jan svensson, who has been making electronic music for the better part of 30 years as the artist behind such aliases as frak, studio ss and alvars orkestra. svensson also runs legendary swedish dance and experimental music label börft, the product of a mutual appreciation for severed heads and terse tapes. as villa Åbo he released two records in 1997 on börft and remained inactive for 17 years until the dutch label bio rhythm coaxed him into revisiting the project and released a double 12&#8243,, in 2014. jan has since followed with a steady stream of 12” singles for kontra-musik, noise in my head and radio lundberg.
“magnetic moves” is villa Åbo’s debut album, originally released in an limited edition of 65 hand-numbered cassettes by funeral fog in 2016.
clocking in at over 46 minutes, this first-ever vinyl edition spreads the 8 ragged techno tracks across four sides for maximum loudness. some songs are aggressively potent, with cyclical synth riffs and razor-sharp acid lines riding a heavy, funk-fuelled techno groove. others tracks are more fluid, vintage underground resistance or derrick may with killer drum machine workouts that come in handy as dj tools. all songs have been remastered by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the record is housed in a custom made jacket designed by eloise leigh, featuring a photograph of jan’s mother’s house, the meaning behind “villa Åbo”. each copy includes a double-sided postcard with notes.

vinyl only - limited to 200. after a short hiatus, blossom kollektiv returns with a brand new limited edition vinyl release. this time around industry veteran, matthias vogt, presents his voyeur ep. no stranger to the label, his latest features three deep and melodic cuts with one remix of the title track from tanzlife v id ensemble. starting things out with “voyeur,” we move into beautiful soundscapes that truly tell a story though its lush melodies, while still packing enough punch to get the crowd going in the right moments of a set. followed by tanzlife v id ensemble’s interpretation, they bring a more traditional deep house version replacing the lush melodies with more club ready synth stabs and pads while reworking the composition for the peak moments in the club. now flipping over to the b-side we start with rubin a track full of sunny time vibes. this is the type of track that you’d love to play during the cold and dark months to bring a little temporary sunshine without it actually being sunny. rich deep pads are paired here with uplifting synths and a classic deep house arrangement to bring bright vibes anytime of the year. finally finishing things off with the comeback, we get something a little different with its tribal percussion and once again feel good vibes but the standout here is mathias’s display as a classically trained pianist, which he displays wonderfully throughout the track. one thing that is clear through his years of music composing experience in electronic music and beyond is you can expect finely crafted works of art that work both on the dance floor and as tools to spark your imagination.
